Angus was sitting in a chair in the snug, his laptop on his knee, Thor dozing at his feet. He chewed his lip in concentration as he typed an email, a frown between his eyes. Opposite him, Fin was studying Hugh’s latest letter, outlining how Karen’s demands might now be placated. He sighed from somewhere deep inside his chest and Angus glanced up. ‘Are you all right, Fin?’

‘Mmm.’ Fin waved a sheet of paper and simply said, ‘Karen.’

Thor pricked up his ears, gazed up at Angus and settled back to sleep. Angus said, ‘She’s not still harping on about adultery?’

‘Hugh’s spoken to her solicitor, Cheryl.’ Fin scratched his head. ‘I think he’s finally managed to convince her that Jess is an employee, that nothing is going on between us.’

‘And is there?’ Angus raised an eyebrow.

‘Is there what?’

‘Anything between you and Jess?’

‘No, there isn’t.’ Fin shrugged. ‘While this divorce is going on, I can’t let anything complicate my life.’ He paused. ‘Jess is great, though.’

‘So – when you’re through with Karen, what then?’

‘I don’t know, Angus.’ Fin reached for a glass of whisky on the table. ‘I think I need to take some time for myself – I could see Issy and Alice, then go on a long holiday, hire a boat.’ He swallowed a deep draught. ‘Although it might be better to have some company. Who knows?’

Angus pressed a key on his computer and sent his email. ‘I’m going to Sri Lanka.’

‘When?’ Fin was surprised.

‘In the middle of November – for six weeks.’

‘What about the legs?’

‘Oh.’ Angus glanced down as if he’d forgotten about them. ‘I’ll be up and running by then – I’ll make sure I am.’

‘The doctor said it would take longer.’

‘I’m working on it,’ Angus shrugged. ‘I’ll be fine.’

Fin leaned forward. ‘Why Sri Lanka?’

‘I’ve been offered a job. I’ve just said I’ll take it. Some guy has written a book and the publishers want photos of animals in the wild – leopards, elephants.’

‘Isn’t that dangerous?’ Fin took another swig of whisky.

‘Some things are, Fin – wild animals, motorbikes, relationships with women.’ Angus’s eyes glistened. ‘You have to die of something.’

Fin smiled. ‘I’d prefer to go happily with the love of a good woman.’

Angus reached a hand down to pat Thor, who stuck out a pink tongue. ‘I’ll be back after Christmas. I want to catch up with Fabrice first. Then I thought I’d spend a couple of months here, so that you can take a break. What do you think?’

Fin closed his eyes. ‘The divorce will be over. Yes, that would be good.’

‘Great.’ Angus closed his laptop. ‘That’s decided. By the start of next year, Karen will be gone, Jess will be gone, I’ll be back here, and you can take a well-deserved holiday.’

Fin reached for the whisky bottle and gestured to Angus, who nodded. Fin splashed amber liquid into two glasses and sighed. ‘Next year will be a kinder one, I hope. Hamish has his London musical, Mother’s looking well. It’s just a shame we can’t persuade Jess to stay in Scotland.
